Surface Design Fun at Quilt Fest

There were several surface design classes offered this year and from what the students had to say, it sounded like everyone enjoyed all of them!  Painting, stenciling, dying and embellishing were some of the techniques taught by Lisa Chin and Ann Munos.  Kaye Evans presented a class on Art Quilts but I don't have any photos of her class, but I did see some of the results and they were all wonderful and different.

There is a Surface Design group who meet in SLC bi-monthly.  If you are interested or would like more information, click HERE.  This is a very diversified group which includes quilters, fiber artists, weavers, dyers and more.

Some "Save the Boo-bies" photos

Valerie Burton has done it again this year!  What a cute theme (Save the Boo-bies) and darling pink ladybugs!  The blocks from last year have all gone into some wonderful quilts and fun quilted items!  The blocks all seem to get better and more creative each year as well.  You can view one of Valerie's Quilt Fest 2012 albums HERE.

Just a few teaser photos!  All of the funds raised will go to the Garfield Memorial Hospital Mobile Mammography Services.  The mobile unit provides mammograms to women who live in outlying areas where mammography screenings may not be readily available.  More screenings mean fewer deaths due to breast cancer!

Quilt Fest Festivities

Lots of ladies (and a few guys) have certainly caught the "Quilting Bug"!!!  The Ugly Bugs have been out having a ball!  There were four of these creatures bugging anyone and everyone.

Luncheons have been well attended and as always a lot of fun.

Congratulations to Virginia Lee for winning the Silver Thimble award for all of her years of service and promoting quilting.

A few wonderful quilts from Flavin Glover's trunk show at the Wednesday luncheon.

Three dimensional cubes created from diamond shaped log cabin blocks by Flavin Glover.

Just one of Claudia Myers Clark's beautiful quilts presented at the Thursday's luncheon.

News Flash for Quilt Fest

Only 12 days until the fun begins!  If you haven't signed up for a Lecture/Luncheon yet, there are still tickets available.  We just found out that there will be a BIG prize drawn each day.......(drum roll please) for a SEWING MACHINE!  Yes!  There are FOUR machines that have been donated by some of our wonderful supporters, along with lots of other fun prizes.

Flavin Glover will be presenting "Patch by Patch" as our guest speaker at the Wednesday luncheon.  She creates amazing patterns using the traditional log cabin block, but her designs are anything but traditional.   Her "Row Houses" quilt was selected as one of the 100 Best American Quilts of the 20th Century.

Claudia Clark Myers will talk about "The Pitfalls of Prize Winning Quilts" at Thursdays luncheon.  She was chosen as Minnesota Quilter of the year in 2006 and has won numerous awards for her quilts.  Claudia also collaborates with her good friend, Marilyn Badger, who is a well known long-arm quilter. They make a great team!

Ann Fahl  is the guest speaker on Friday, presenting "Quilts and Inspiration".  She has authored two books, "Coloring With Thread" and "Dancing With Thread".  She is well known for her free-spirited approach to free motion quilting using many different types of thread and very little marking.

Karen Combs will be our final speaker on Saturday with a talk on "Quilts of Illusion".  Karen has been nominated for Teacher of the Year in 1995, 2000, and 2005 by Professional Quilter Journal.  She is well known for her ability to take a traditional block and turn it into an optical illusion.

There may be an opening in some of the classes these talented ladies are teaching.  Check at the registration desk if you are interested in any of the classes being offered, or if you would like to attend one of the luncheon lectures.

Hope to see you there!!
