Fun Guest Speaker at Kalico Kut-ups

Kalico Kut-ups April meeting had Karlee Porter as their guest speaker.  Karlee just turned 22 !  She is a very talented machine quilter and has won the "Create Your Style" art quilting design contest at the International Quilt Show in Houston last fall. (It was her first competition!)  Karlee has entered her quilt in the HMQS competition which is in two weeks.  Look for "Shimmering Symphony" (lots of crystals, too).  All I can say is "watch out quilting world, here comes Karlee"!

Hand dyed fabric.

Most of Karlee's quilts are whole cloth.  This one was spray painted and the letters were painted with acrylics.  Lots of machine quilting and sparkles.

She really likes words and swavorski crystals.

Click on the photo to get a better look at the quilting.

An here is "Shimmering Symphony".  A picture does not do it justice.

We also had another special visitor!  Lisa Chin and her daughter Ann Marie brought Shayla, a service dog (puppy) in training.  Most of our members didn't know she was even here....so quiet and well behaved.....Ann Marie was too.

One of Lisa's work in progress designs.

Cindy's version of last year's bom designed by Bev.

And finally, Charlies nine patch quilt from blocks exchanged   years ago in another guild.  It went together beautifully!

UQG Opportunity Quilt

"Sew Lovely" is our theme for Quilt Fest this year and this quilt says it sew well.  The quilt top was made by Sharon Aposhian Wright, Barbara Walsh, Francine Barrett, Megan Legas, Helen Butler, Josephine Keasler, and Krisanne Watkins.  Everyone designed and stitched a section or round and then passed it to the next person.  The resulting quilt is much more than "sew lovely"....it is so-o-o exquisite!  The pictures don't begin to show the outstanding work put into this quilt.

Click on the photo to enlarge it in order to see those hand quilting stitches!  Yes, it is all done by hand by Sharon Aposhian Wright, Barbara Walsh, Francine Barrett, Megan Legas, Helen Butler, Cathy Payne, Leslie Randle and Kimberly Lohner.  The binding was done be Cody Mazuran and the finished size is 80"x 94".

You will probably recognize most of the names of these quilters as very talented, award winning Utah Quilters!  The quilt will be hanging at HMQS in the lobby, May 9-11, so stop by and take a good look at it.  Tickets will be available at $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00.  The quilt will also be shown in different areas of the state, so check with your area rep for dates / meetings.

Full Swing into Spring!

This week was our Board meeting for UQG.  There are a lot of fun things in the works and planning stages for this year.  The April Beeline is available on the website and is full of interesting articles and happenings.   Don't miss the third installment of Kim Diehl's bom, Farmgirl Finery.  You do need to be a member of the Utah Quilt Guild in order to access the Beeline and Kim's pattern. Just go to the main website to join.  Lots of benefits for only $20!

There will be two buses for the Shop Hop which will be June 15th.  Registration form and full information will be in the Beeline next month.

The "Giggles n' Stitches" guild's first Quilt Fest will be this weekend - Fri & Sat - in Blackfoot, ID.  They are having a quilt show and classes, so if you are in the area or traveling nearby, stop in and see them.

The classes for Quilt Fest have been chosen and the brochure is in the final stages of preparation for printing.

Class selection committee busy checking teacher class submissions!

This really is a hard job!

Requires a lot of concentration!
