Fun 2014 Quilt Fest

Opening Night Gala at Quilt Fest.  A time to meet the teachers, see some demos and visit with friends.

Ami Simms (right by the main door) showing her "Magic Ball".  These are so fun to make and kids, big and small, love to take them apart and put them together again.

Lots of interesting demos going on throughout the room.
And then there are the chocolate fountains!  With fresh fruit to dip!
Wednesday luncheon crowd.  Some folks come just for the lecture at lunch which are always informative and entertaining!  Each day one of our National Teachers is the guest speaker and gives the attendees a chance to see some of their work.

Nine Days Left!

Okay, Folks, we are getting down to the wire!  A week from tomorrow the Quilt Fest Committee will begin getting things ready for the quilt show, classes and everything that needs to happen behind the scenes to make this year a success! Then the real fun begins with the Tuesday evening Opening Gala where you can meet the teachers, see their class projects, and some demos.  The opening Gala also gives everyone a chance to see friends and catch up on what's been happening since last year's Quilt Fest.

There are still some opening in classes, so if you still haven't signed up check the website for what is available.  Once you get to Quilt Fest, you can still sign up for a class at the registration desk.

And, don't forget the quilt show and vendors!  Can't have Quilt Fest without them!!  Hope to see you there!

Where Did June Go?

It's time for summer to slow down just a bit so we can enjoy it a little more!  June has just flown by and this coming weekend is the 4th of July already!!

Snake River Valley Quilt Guild in Idaho Falls hosted their Quilt Show in mid-June.  I did get to see all of the quilts up close and personal and you will want to mark your calendars for next year!  There were about 120 quilts on exhibit made by some outstanding quilters along with some vendors, demos, etc.

The next "must see" event is the International Quilt Invitational Exhibition hosted by the Brigham City Museum, beginning July 1st - August 23rd.  Zena Thorpe is the featured artist this year. There will also be quilts on display from three countries and eleven states.  Here is the link for the Museum for more information.

If you attend any shows or events this summer, please send me pictures and a little information so it can be featured here on the blog.  You can leave a comment on this post with contact information or send an email to "".

Have a fun, safe 4th of July!

Official Start of Summer

Today is Memorial Day....a day to remember those who served our country so we could remain free.  Sending many thank you's to all the men and women who are protecting this great country.

This would be a great weekend to work on some Quilts of Valor!  Whatever your plans, be safe.

Upcoming Event

This just in from Barb Murdock:

I just got on the website for the Small Town Quilt Show in Midway at the Zermatt, June 26-28 and they have more super deals for this event.  They even have great deals for the hotel!

I signed up for all of the lectures and they ended up costing me less than just the two or three I wanted to go to.

Just thought you might be interested and would want to let your quilting friends know.

I know that they had to cancel two of the national teachers due to low sign ups, but they do have some good specials right now for the rest of the events.

Hopefully some of you will join me.    then click on the small town quilt show.

The "Home Machine Quilting Show" begins tomorrow!!  Today is set-up day for all the vendors, quilts, and special exhibits.  There is an enormous amount of work involved in a show of this size.  A multitude of volunteers and vendors were busy getting booths set up so we can all drool over the new fabrics, machines, and gadgets.  There will be about 200 special exhibit quilts to see along with all of the judged quilts and wearables.  It seemed like complete chaos with cars, vans and trucks with trailers coming in and out of the exhibition hall, but by tomorrow morning everything will be in place and ready for your enjoyment.  So, get your cameras, walking shoes, and wallets ready.

Oh, yes!  The show is at the South Towne Exhibition Center in Sandy, UT.  The show opens at 10 a.m. Thurs., Fri, and Sat.  It closes at 5 p.m. Thurs. and Friday, and 4 p.m. on Sat.  The awards ceremony will be tomorrow (Thurs) at 12:30 p.m.  Hope to see you all there!

National Quilt Day(s) Fun

Davis North/Weber areas had a very busy and fun weekend to celebrate National Quilt Day!  The schedule of activities for the two day event was front and center as guests arrived.  Yes, if you click on the picture, you can read it and see that both days were the 21st.

Legacy Village in Layton, has a retirement village, assisted living and rehab units.  The first trunk show was a variety of quilts that belonged to some of the residents.  Sandra, from the Kalico Kut-ups chapter interviewed these residents and told the stories of the quilts.  It was very inspiring and fun to see how happy they were to be recognized.  Below are just a few of their quilts plus a crocheted bedspread.

Ten chapters participated in this event, so there was a lot of variety in the demos and items to purchase.  Lots of mini quilts and baskets for the silent auction as well.  There were 60 quilts on display and Pam White won first place for viewers choice!  All of the trunk shows were wonderful, too.  It is so interesting to see the different styles and how quilters evolve over time.  Three of the trunk shows were presented by UQG Board members.....Josephine Keasler, Kathy Porter, and Crystal North!  Lorie Bashein and Carol Johnson showed beautiful quilts as well.

Blackfoot Quilt Fest

The Blackfoot Quilt Guild in Blackfoot, ID, is hosting their second Quilt Fest on March 28th - 29th.  For complete information go to Blackfoot Quilt Fest .  Registration is still open for classes.  Those who attended last year had a great time so this might mean a road trip for some of us.

Spring is in the Air!

The weather is announcing that it is almost spring! Along with green shoots emerging from the ground and birds singing, quilters are getting ready for some fun events!

March 14th is the official National Quilt Day. Maybe March should be National Quilt Month!?  We do need more than one day to celebrate our passion for this craft, don't you agree?

Bear River Area will celebrate NQD on the 14th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Brigham City Emergency Services Building.  Bring a pot luck item to share.  There will be lots of fun activities all day.

Salt Lake North and Salt Lake South areas will have a full day of fun on March 22nd at the West Jordan Senior Center, 8025 S 2200 W, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Davis - Weber North area will have a two day event March 21st & 22nd at Legacy Village in Layton (on Fairfield Rd, south of Antelope Dr.).  Please use the north entrance.  There will be a quilt show, demos, mini quilts and baskets for silent auction, trunk shows and demos.  The ten guilds that are participating will also have items for sale.  Hours are Friday - 1 p.m. - 7 p.m. and Sat. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  This is the second year for this fun event.

Visit some of the blogs on the right side bar for information from some of our other chapters and areas.
Some of the local quilt shops will also be hosting some special events during the month so don't miss out on the fun!

Snow Goose Festival

Marilyn Steele sent these pictures she took at the Snow Goose Festival in Delta, Utah.  Can you imagine seeing hundreds of these beautiful geese all in one place?  I've written posts about this festival before, but this is the first time with photos.  If you want to experience this event first hand, the dates are Feb. 21-22.

There will be a quilt show put on by the Piece In The Valley quilt guild and many fun activities for the whole family during the festival.  For more information, go to their website .  Sounds like a fun weekend!

Two new categories for Quilt Fest 2014!

Yes!  There will be two new youth categories this year.  One for youths age 14 and under, and one for youths age 15 - 18.  And yes, there will be awards for first and second along with participation ribbons.  But wait...there's more!  How about a one year subscription to UQG's electronic BeeLine?!

So, Kids, Moms, Grandmothers, and Teachers, get those quilts finished or started.  We need to encourage our next generation of quilters to continue this wonderful form of art.  As Quilters we truly are artists. Maybe not with pencil or paints, but with fabric.  Traditional or modern or art, there is a place for all in this wonderful craft of quilting.

More information will be available in the Quilt Fest Brochure and here on the blog.  If anyone has a question about the show, leave a comment here on the blog.

A Big Thank You

Utah Quilters always come through!  Our project for last year was to provide quilts for all of our police cars to be used anytime the need arose.  There were 651 quilts requested by the various departments.  We exceeded that goal with 782 quilts total.  The extra quilts have gone to the UHP, with requests for more!

The first BIG thank you goes to Josephine Keasler for spearheading this project.  A lot of work and organization went into this!  The next BIG thank you goes to our area representatives who got the word out to their local agencies and then to their guild chapter members.  Finally, THANK YOU to everyone who made this happen by making all of these quilts!
