Quilt Days at Colonial House in SLC has begun. This past Tuesday (can you believe it was already the 4th Tues. of the month?!) more than fifty quilters showed up to begin getting quilts ready for the 2013 Holiday Quilt Show & Auction. There was lively chatter and laughter throughout the day and some new faces. There were ladies piecing, appliqueing, quilting, pressing, marking stitching lines, along with countless behind the scenes activities.

Ogden's Quilt Guild

The Ogden Quild Guild held their first meeting of 2012 last Wednesday. Lots of information and lots of fun programs planned for this year. Their meetings are held at the Senior Center in Washington Terrace. Show and Tell revealed some quilts that members were able to finish during the holidays.

Winnie Rhodes made this quilt for a very special lady who passed away before Winnie could give it to her.

I don't know who is hiding behind this beauty. Fun colors.

Marilyn took some bom's from a prior year and made small wall quilts instead of one big one. Good idea!

This quilt is a mystery quilt (finished!) that Kaye Evans taught in 2010. Love it!

Jolene showed her Kaffe Quilt, made over the past two years. It was a Kaffe Club bom at Sweet Lavender in Roy.

Quilt with a Story

Carol Hunt from Midway donated this quilt to our "Happy Chemo Project" which is this year's Charity Project. Carol tell us that: "This quilt top was given to me in 1990 by Virginia 'Rusty' Hendrick. She is an award winning hand quilter, past secretary of the NQA and purveyor of a portable plastic quilt rack which she sold at quilt venues. It was given to her by the mother of a young lady who was working on it and died of cancer before she could finish it and the mother did not quilt so gave it to Rusty. I admired it and Rusty gave it to me. The ladies faces were all askew as were the kimonos. I took them apart and redid them. I backed it, hand quilted it, and bound it. We recently moved from California to Utah and I came across it and felt it should go to the Quilts for Cancer." Thank you Carol, for giving us the background story to this fun quilt.

Deseret Hospital Quilt Museum

This is a great year for the Deseret Hospital Quilt Museum at This is the Place Park! We have four great events planned, so mark your calendar.
The first is for the Relief Society Birthday Celebration, the month of March. Jodi Warner has graciously agreed to let us hang a quilt show of her quilts. She will be giving her own trunk show on March 10th at 1:00pm. It’s open to everyone and free to guild members. Don’t miss this, if you have never been to the museum, this is a great opportunity to get acquainted with the building and what it has to offer.

The next event will be in April. The park has baby animal days and we are going to hang baby quilts for the whole month. We need your help in allowing us to hang your baby quilts. We will be tying some baby quilts also so look for more details in the future.

During the summer we are going to have a Quilt History Fair. It will run from May 25 through September 3. We will be hanging different collections of antique quilts and have different lectures on both quilt history and preserving antique quilts. All this will be free to guild members. We are still working on scheduling so again stay tuned for more details.

For Christmas, we are having a Log Cabin Christmas. The show will be hung from November 23rd until the end of December. We want to hang as many log cabin quilts as we can. They don’t need to be Christmas, they only need to be log cabins. If you have been thinking of making one or are in the process of making one, this will give you time to finish. There will be prizes so again stay tuned.

The Deseret Quilt Museum is a beautiful building dedicated to the art of quilting. There is a large collection of antique quilts that belong there that need to be recognized for their outstanding quilts. We are trying to promote this museum and make it a focal point for the Utah Quilt Guild as that is why it was built. The library will soon be housed there as well. Please give us your support in developing this venue. We need help in all aspects of putting on these shows. We would like to make Utah more of a quilt destination.

Happy New Year everyone! It's official! 2012 is here full steam ahead! This is the time to welcome the "new" things that will be happening in our quilt guilds this year.....new chapter officers, new programs, new projects, new members, the list goes on. Let's make this a wonderful, fun filled year.

Almost Time for a New Year

Here's wishing that everyone had a wonderful Holiday. Are you getting ready for the New Year? Making any resolutions for 2012? Quilters always seem to make the same ones every year....at least those that I know. What's #1 on your list? Here are a couple that I've made almost every year:

1. Finish some UFO's (my preference is PHD's, you know, "working on my phd")

     Some guilds actually offer prizes for those finished projects! I make my list for the year, but have yet to get a prize for finishing something. Maybe we should just purge some of those 10 year projects with the really ugly fabric that we wouldn't put in a doggie bed now! Fess up, you know you have some of those! I'm not sure who actually said this first, (maybe Bonnie Hunter?): "If it's still ugly you haven't cut it small enough".

2. Go on a fabric diet. (Not)

     This one really takes ~~some~~ a lot of will power. We've all tried to work just from our stash, but for some reason we just don't have the right shade of blue or green or.....so off we go to the fabric store.   Actually, I blame the fabric companies. They just keep producing all that new, colorful, happy, gotta have fabric which makes our stash look outdated on a monthly basis. And of course, a friend calls and tells you a new fabric store just opened so off you go.....even if it's in another state! Yes, it has happened to me. What about vacation? First thing we do is look up quilt shops, right?!

Whatever your goal or resolution is for this year, don't feel guilty when it gets broken. Notice I said "when" not "if". Quilters as a group are kind, friendly, and giving, no matter where you live. So, for 2012, have fun with your friends and fabric, let the artist in you show in your work, and get those PHD's out of your sewing room.

AIDS Memorial Quilt at USU

AIDS Memorial Quilt
The AIDS Memorial Quilt, founded in 1987, is the largest ongoing community arts project in the world, with more than 40,000 panels, each memorializing a life lost to AIDS. USU is excited to announce that a portion of the AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on display at the Taggart Student Center Stevenson Ballrom November 28 to December 1, 2011. A host of events will accompany the memorial display to foster remembrance, awareness, and hope.

Grayson Country Quilters

At the Oct. 19 meeting of the Grayson Country Quilters we learned how to make coiled fabric baskets on the sewing machine. Sidney Christensen, President Elect for 2012, was the instructor. Gail Glover also showed other types of fabric baskets.

We also had a great show and tell evening with members bringing finished quilts. Debbie Bayles who spearheaded the Hospital Sampler quilt, brought the completed wall art. It will be officially donated to the hospital at some future date.

Quilt of Valor Presented to Workman Family

Over the past month, hundreds of friends, family and comrades have paid tribute to hometown hero Jason Workman, who gave the ultimate price in his personal fight against terrorism. Standing behind him all the way in his dangerous assignments, were his parents, wife, son, brothers, and their wives and children. In recognition of their great and sorrowful loss, local quilters joined together to piece a Quilt of Valor for his parents, and a Patriotic wall hanging for his wife and son. These were presented to the Workman family on Sept. 15 at their home.

“We hope the comforting symbol of this quilt will remind them always of Jason’s love of his country and his family, as well as their love for him. Its country stars symbolize his roots in the rural west, and Blanding’s respect and love for him and their whole family. We also want Staci and Jax to remember there is a whole town here who will never forget Jason, and are praying for them, and all the Workmans.” – Grayson Country Quilters

In 2003, Catherine Roberts of Seaford, DE, started the Quilts of Valor Foundation when her son and his 630th MP Company were being deployed from Germany to Iraq for one year. She was thrown into a group of other Americans who send their loved one into harm’s way. The Grayson Country Quilters are only one of hundreds of organizations who have since joined the effort to make quilts to comfort the wounded and the families who have lost their loved one in this war on terror. Special thanks to Holly Walker for her help and insight in this effort.

Houston International Quilt Show news:

“Harmony Within,” by Sue McCarty from Roy, Utah took the Best of Show award, which comes with a $10,000 prize.

"I'm just shaking," said a breathless McCarty after accepting the award and requisite giant check. "The quilt is about relationships. It's about a right-brained dragon and a left-brained fisherman. I don't think about (traditional or art styles) when I'm designing, it just comes from within."
McCarty is awarded the International Quilt Association's top prize a year after winning the $10,000 Best of Show honors at the American Quilter's Society show in Paducah, Ky., in April 2010 for her Tribute to Tolkien quilt.
McCarty's predominately red, blue and gold quilt for the IQA show features Asian motifs.
In the center, structures and birds on the water are framed in a bordered circle.
In the top right corner a dragon clutches calligraphy tools, a key and a book. On the bottom left side of the quilt, a figure with a fishing pole leans against a tree.
McCarty plays with the viewer, by overlapping the tree branches into the framed, aquatic scene and the quilt is finished with a three-sided, patterned black and gold border.

Quilt Fest "Block of the Day"

Attached is the picture of the finished, Block of the Day project from QuiltFest. It was designed as a little wall-hainging for your sewing room--a place to put all those pins we've been collecting (QuiltFest, Shop Hop, etc.) so we can get them off our lanyards and give our necks a rest! We do have surplus kits available. If anyone would like to purchase a kit, they are $10 and can be ordered from me (Paula Dalby, 801-856-5573, utahoosier@yahoo.com) or your local area rep.

Theme for Quilt Fest 2012

"Catch the Quilting Bug" is the theme for the UQG's 2012 Quilt Fest. There are pictures of the actual "Quilt Bug" (A quilt covered yellow VW beetle/bug) in the previous post. It is so darn cute! Quilt Fest 2012 will be held in St. George, UT at the convention center from Sept. 18 - 22. Special rates for this event are being offered at the Hilton Garden Inn (next to the convention center - 1-877-782-9444) for $99.00 per night, and at the Fairfield Inn - Marriott (across the street from Convention Center -1-888236-2427) for $89.00 per night. More information will be available during the up-coming year.

Thank you to Crystal, all the board members, volunteers and members that helped make Quilt Fest 2011 a success. There is a tremendous amount of work and planning in order to put this fun event together. Quilt Bug

After the luncheon at Quilt Fest last Saturday, we were treated to a fun surprise! The "Quilt Bug" was parked outside the conference center! I've seen photos of the "Bug", but they don't do justice to the creativity that went into this project.

The ladies that designed and quilted this even used velcro for the door flaps! "Catch the Quilting Bug" is UQG's theme for the 2012 Quilt Fest which will be held in St. George, UT. More on this later.

Sorry for the delay with Quilt Fest updates.....computer issues. Anyway, the four days at Quilt Fest just seemed to fly by, and now it is all over. There were so many activities going on from early morning until late evening it would be impossible to do it all, although some quilters tried.

Here are just a few pictures from the vendors mall. There were lots of new fabrics and tools, patterns and kits, plus some luscious wool for socks.

One booth we tried to avoid but couldn't was the candy booth!!

Each year our guilds as well as individuals put together and donate these "art auction" baskets to raise money for next year. These have evolved over the years from small table centerpieces to some really large baskets filled to overflowing with goodies. Most are for the silent auction and the more elaborate ones go to the live auction.

Then we have the "Quilts for the Cure". All proceeds from these quilts and quilted items go to the Susan G Koman Foundation for Breast Cancer Research. There is another whole display next to this one. Each year fat quarters are sold during the year, then completed blocks are turned in and displayed for voting. Then volunteers put the blocks together to make bags, clocks and quilts for the next year. Tickets are sold during quilt fest for an opportunity to win one of these items.

Quilt Fest 2011

It's here! And it's already day two of the UQG Quilt Fest!! Time really does fly when you are having fun. Tuesday night was "Meet the Teachers" and a wonderful trunk show by Jill Finley of Jillilly Studio. We met Sally Collins, George and Virginia Siciliano, and David Taylor, our National Teachers for this year.....and about 45 local teachers. They all had samples of what they would be teaching. Seeing all of these quilts, bags, and everything in-between really whets the appetite to be creative.
Then they open the vendors mall....need I say more?

These are just some of the Mini Quilts that will be won by some lucky attendees. This is one of the guilds fund raisers and all of the quilts this year are wonderful! The winners will be drawn on Saturday before the luncheon, so there is still time to buy some tickets.

African American Quilt Show (and Quilt Fest)

The Museum of Art at Brigham Young University in Provo is hosting a display of African- American quilts, featuring the work of Yvonne Wells, which will continue through November 19, 2011. Some of the quilts are very primitive, but many are quite sophisticated. I was especially in- trigued by several of Yvonne Wells’ quilts which spoke to her experiences living in the South during the Civil Rights Movement. This is not the kind of show where you look at a quilt, take a picture and move on. Many of these quilts deserve the kind of attention you would give a painting, trying to dis-cern the artist’s motivation and or message.

BYU has offered a special event for the Utah Quilt Guild during Quilt Festival. On Thursday, September 22, the museum will host the UGQ from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Docents will be available, and they will serve light refreshments. For those of you who are attending Quilt Fest, there will be a brochure for the show in your welcome packet. A sign-up sheet will be available at the Welcome Desk, and we would like you to sign up before 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, so that we have a rough estimate of how many will be attending. This will help the museum to be ready for us. If you are unable to attend Quilt Festival, come along anyway. There is no charge, and it is a good time to get together with your quilting friends.

Thanks Barbara, for keeping us up to date on fun happenings. If you can't make it on Thursday, the museum is open 10:00 am- 6:00 pm, Monday through Saturday; on Thursday and Friday they stay open until 9:00 P.M. The quilts will be on display until November.

Yes!! We have another wonderful quilt designer in our midst! Give a cheer for Emily Bailey, who is also on the UQG board, in charge of one of our charitable projects this year (and maybe longer), "Happy Chemo" quilts.

Emily's quilt, "Playing It Retro", is on the cover of the current issue of McCall's Quick Quilts. Many quilters from Blanding were successful garnering blue ribbons at the San Juan County fair in August. There are about 8 different categories for quilts. The guild was especially happy to see so many of their quilt camp youth quilters enter the fair and win ribbons. Summer Social and Show and Tell

Blanding quilters had their annual summer social Aug. 17 with 23 quilters attending. A Café Rio buffet was the main fare. Deb Bayles gave an update on the hospital quilt service project. All blocks are done and it is being set together. Packets were distributed for the Fallen Police Officer quilt which will also be finished in September.

The highlight of the evening was the sharing of quilts and stories about quilters. Kathleen shared about a special quilt her mother, Beth Guymon, had made for her when she was in high school. She took it with her to nursing school, and used its through lots of years to snuggle up in. Recently she found it again, at a time when she needed its comforting feel and reminder of Mom. Mitty Brice showed the quilt her mother had on frames to quilt, when she died, and showed how she had finally finished it, as a tribute to her mother.

Kathy Hurst shared some special stories about her mother, Delpha Zentner who passed away July 19. She made over 20,000 humanitarian receiving blankets in her lifetime for the LDS church relief efforts. One year the Blanding quilt also tied quilts to help her. As a tribute to Delpha her ward relief society planned a special “finish the blankets” day July 19, the very morning she passed away. They competed 63 blankets that day with another 40 plus coming in later. In addition, the Relief Society did a final push for Grandma “Z’s: pet project, collecting Campbell Soup labels for schools. Just prior to her death they brought over 1000 labels as a tribute to her tireless efforts reminding others to help out schools. The Blanding Elementary will be the beneficiary of these labels. Thanks for your inspiring life, Delpha.

Fall Fun!

Can you believe it's already Labor Day weekend? Where did the summer go? If you missed some of the wonderful quilt shows and exhibits that were held the past few months, don't worry, there are lots of fall shows coming up soon!

The Utah State Fair starts on Sept. 8th and runs through the 18th. Along with the regular quilt show will be the challenge quilts using the challenge fabric. Challenge shows are always fun to see. It's always amazing to see the designs and different ways the fabric is used in the quilts. Of course, the whole fair is fun!

The Utah Quilt Festival will begin Sept. 20th through the 24th in Provo, UT. If you haven't signed up for classes yet, there are still spots available in some of the classes. Check the UQG web site for class listings and availability. Don't want to take a class? Come for the day....see a wonderful quilt show, mini quilts, Quilts for the Cure, and check out the vendors mall. There are still some luncheon/lecture tickets available, too. Check with the registration desk for more information during Quilt Fest, or the UQG website anytime.

Springville Museum Quilt Show

There's still time to see the wonderful array of quilts at the Springville Museum of Art. This is one of the best quilt shows I've seen. There was one gallery after another of outstanding work, from traditional patterns and hand quilting to art quilts and machine thread painting, along with everything in-between.

Helen Butler won "Best of Show" with her stunning "Turkish Delight". Photos do not do this quilt justice. This one really has the "wow" factor....that was the word you heard from everyone who looked at it.

This quilt, by Marilyn Toone, won the "Visual Impact" award for Cinco de Mayo. The color choices in the center of the quilt makes it sparkle, while the appliqued border contains riot of color.

Can you believe that this quilt began as one piece of hand dyed, batiked piece of fabric? Anne Munoz captured a look into space through the Hubble Telescope in her fabric and quilting. She won the "Artistic Impression" award for "The Perfect Storm.

Okay, just a few teaser photos to whet your appetite for more. The show will continue through out the month of August, so you still have a couple of weeks to see it.

111 Quilts and New Venue Pair Up for a Winning Show

There were a lot of pluses at the 2011 Quilt Show: More room, better light, air conditioning, convenience to other activities, frames, rest rooms, seating, movie room, and increased numbers attending and best of all 111 beautiful quilts to view.

At the end of the show a short awards program was held, before the quilts were taken down. Holly Walker was presented with a new Quilt of Valor to be utilized as needs arise for the local National Guard unit. She was happy to announce that the unit was on their way back to the United States, after having serving a year in Afghanistan.

Roberta Bond from Bluff was drawn out as the winner of the Country Stars Raffle quilt. “She was pretty excited when she got the phone call July 4th, as she had never won anything before” stated President Janet Wilcox. “We so appreciate everyone who made donations to the guild on this project. It helps to fund all the projects we do each year.”

A special recognition award of 4^th of July fabrics, went to Robin and Kay Jones for their service on the raffle project. Each of them donated over 50 hours at Clarkes tending the quilt and booth. Toni Lacy's creative "Children's Parade" display added a welcoming sparkle to this year's show. "We want to thank the quilters who came up on Saturday and Sunday, and helped man the booth, and take down on Monday," stated the officers. Lots of good husbands, sons, son-in-laws, and friends showed on to help put up the frames, and shuttle them up and down the stairs. Special thanks to Brian Sherman and Sherie Eldridge who pitched in when we really needed help."

Youth – There was a great showing of quilts in the youth category, most made by 1^st time quilters from the recently held 4-H/Guild quilt camp. “It was wonderful seeing how enthused and motivated the girls were to finish their quilts,” stated Gail Glover, secretary of the guild. Ann Pugh one of the 1^st timer quilters actually made a second quilt, a beautiful blue star pattern which was shown with the patriotic quilts.

Small Quilts included wall hangings, table runners, tree skirts. baby quilts.

1st -- Gail Glover, Grace’s Garden was a layered ragged edge flannel quilt with bright appliqués.

2nd -- Gail Glover, Jungle Baby featured three-dimensional animals on a baby blanket.

3rd -- Ila Starks, Back on the Farm, was a labor of loving layering and raw edge appliqué. The pattern she used came from Quiltin’ Chicks of Cortez, Colo.

Blanding quilters are encouraged to enter their quilts in the San Juan County Fair in August. The next meeting of the guild will be Wednesday August 17.

Tuesday, the 26th is "Quilt Day" at Colonial House in SLC. Only two more quilt days after this, so come on in to help finish up these gorgeous quilts for the Holiday Quilt Show and Auction in October. The date for August is the 23rd and Sept. 27th. You don't have to be an expert in hand quilting to help, either. There is also applique (yes, the "A" word), along with hand piecing. Someone is always willing to help you get started so don't be shy or afraid that your work isn't good enough.

As many of you know every year we look forward to displaying our authors quilts in our booth at Quilt Market. At Salt Lake City's Spring Market the booth looked fantastic with so many stunning quilts. We know how important our authors quilts are—the expertise, time, and love that goes into each and every stitch, and for that reason, we take great responsibility for them while they're in our care. So it is with a heavy heart that we regret to inform you that at the close of Salt Lake City's Spring Quilt Market, four quilts went missing. The quilts that are unaccounted for are 3 cover quilts and a table runner. They include:

When the crate came back from Quilt Market and was unpacked, it became apparent that these quilts were missing. We went on high alert. We searched high and low, going through every box, drape, tube, you name it we checked it (twice) and to our deep regret the quilts were no where to be found.

Our entire company is mortified by this situation. We have racked our brains and tried to figure out what could have happened to these quilts, to no avail. We are reaching out to you, our readers, for help. We wanted to make you aware of the situation so that you too could keep your eyes and ears open in the hopes of finding these missing works of art. We are offering a reward of $4,000.00—no questions asked—for the return of the quilts. If one quilt is returned, the reward will be based upon the appraised value of the quilt. A Symphony of Colors

Can you believe there's only 9 1/2 weeks before quilt fest?! Deadlines are rapidly approaching, so get your brochures out or check the UQG website for classes you may want to take. August 5th is the deadline for the "random computer selection" for classes. Some classes fill up very fast, so this way everyone has an equal chance to get the class you want.

August 15th is the deadline to order your Quilt Fest Denim Shirt. These are really nice, soft, good quality denim that can be worn as a shirt or an added layer if it's a little cool.

Do you have your quilt ready for the show? Without quilts there is no show. Last year there were a lot of quilts to oh-h-h and ah-h-h over along with some special exhibits. Each year the show gets better and better because more of you are showing your work. For those of you who don't want your quilt judged, the will be a special exhibit this year for "non-judged" quilts.

Don't forget to sign up to volunteer during Quilt Fest. Volunteering is a great way to meet other quilters too.

On-line Class Update

The on-line class presented by Annie Smith has indeed been extended through the month of July........however.......the Utah Quilt Guild didn't realize that there would be an additional expense to extend the class. Consequently, there is a $10.00 fee on Annie's site if you want to take or finish the class during July. That's still a deal for the amount of information available in this class.

We're all still in the "learning mode" of all that is involved in providing programs for all of our members, which encompasses a very large geographical area.

Good news for Utah Quilt Guild members! The new online education program for members has been extended through July!! "Exploring Fabric Choices" by Annie Smith is a "go at your own pace" class comprised of 14 Workshop episodes and 14 Quilt Project episodes. You will have access to all the episodes until the end of June, and during that time you can watch any episode at any time.

There has been a lot of positive feedback from our members who have watched these videos. This class is not just for beginners. Annie gives some great tips and advice for choosing color and value, and shows how and why some colors work together and some not so well. So, if you've ever looked at a fabric and wondered if it was a dark, medium or light, or the right value for your project, take a look at her class videos.

Some of us had a little trouble registering which must be done in order to gain access. So, here are the steps: log onto the UQG website, click on "Membership", then click on "Online Class". This will take you to the UQG page on Annie's site. On the right sidebar is a place that says "Click to Register". Once there complete the information required and submit. Now comes the hard part. Waiting for verification that you are a UQG member and an email that will give you your password. Make sure that you save that password!! The easiest way is to copy and paste. Once you have access to the class, you can have your computer "remember" you.

This class is great for beginners and a nice refresher for every level. Hope you all enjoy the program.

Fun visits

This came in from Becky Smith last week. (Sorry for the delay...had trouble converting it to my Mac). Becky decided to visit some of our guilds just to see what they are doing over the summer. Sure sounds like a fun thing to do. Maybe more of us should do this once in a while.

"It was great being able to visit my friends at different Guild Meetings in the last month. Many of them I hadn’t seen in years, except passing in the hall at Quilt Fest.
I have been reading what their Guilds were doing and I just happened to visit some of their meetings when my favorite thing was happening. A trunk show! Kayie Powers was sharing her quilts and stories to go with them at the Ogden Guild on Wednesday, June 8th. And then I stopped into Roy Pioneer Quilters on Thursday, June 9th and Ruth Gordy was doing a trunk show. Ruth has done many quilts that have been featured in Quilt Magazines thru the years. We even got a glimpse of some things to come.
Thursday Evening, June 9th I went to Piece of Mind Quilt Guild in the Ogden Valley. They were learning a fun Buggy Barn Technique and Janae Tanner showed a fast way of making pieces for doll arms or legs. It would even work for heads.
Tuesday, June 14th I happened to be in the Syracuse Area and stopped in at their meeting. Suzanne Roach showed some techniques for painting on fabric and then showed some of her beautiful quilts.
Thursday, June 16th caught me swinging by Layton Quilters. They had lots of great finished things to show and projects they were working on. Denise Thalman was “Mary Poppins”. Someone would show a quilt and explain the ruler they used and Denise would pull it out of her bag and say,” like this? “
Of course all the groups I visited had Show & Tell, my second favorite thing! I know that they next place I will see most of these quilters will be at Quilt Fest."

The Salt Lake Tribune recently had an article in it about Jackie Bulloch and how she got her community involved in making quilts for their deployed soldiers. It all started because of a news story about a woman in Wisconsin who started "Camo Quilts. Jackie decided that she could make four of these camouflage-fabric quilts for her "boys". By the time this group got finished, they made 474 quilts!! That meant that each member of the 222nd Field Artillery Battalion, also known as the "Triple Deuce", received a "camo quilt".

2011 Quilt Invitational Exhibition

Mark your calendars for the Brigham City Museum-Gallery Exhibit beginning July 1st through August 17th. This exhibit will feature Lenore Crawford along with quilters from Utah. Go to http://www.lenorecrawford.com to see some of her wonderful art quilts. Lenore will be presenting her workshops at the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show July 4 through July 8th this year. She uses color and realism in her quilts, along with impressionistic fabric blending and sometimes even paint to achieve just the right colors.

For those of you who haven't been to the museum, the address is 24 North 300 West. Admission is free. The museum is closed on Sunday and Monday, open Tuesday - Friday from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturday from 1 -5 p.m.

While you are in Brigham City be sure to stop at Village Dry Goods for some fun ideas and, of course, fabric. There are some good, local restaurants when it's time for an energy boost.

Peteetneet Quilt Show

Lots of quilt shows and exhibits are held during the summer months here in Utah, and yes it is almost officially summer even though spring never really happened this year.

If you are planning a road trip, head to Payson, UT and the Peteetneet Quilt Show being held at the Museum. The show started Wed. June 15th and runs through Thurs. June 30th. The Wasatch Front Shop Hop is underway. This fabulous hop ends tomorrow at 6:00 p.m., so get your passports and visit the participating shops for some great fun. The theme this year is "The Greatest Quilt I Ever Read" with blocks based on favorite books. The "hop" goes from Brigham City all the way down to Springville. There are some wonderful prizes to be won, as well. Have fun...don't forget the credit card!

At the April 20 meeting, past president Deb Bayles did a workshop on how to make tubular table runners. They went together quickly, and many ladies come home and made many more. (See attached photo). Two tourists from Vancouver British Columbia came to our meeting at the invitation of Norma Madden, who works in the Visitors Center. They participated in show and tell, with projects they had brought.

Upcoming Events for Grayson Country Quilters in Blanding

May 18 – Quilt guild—Ila Starks will teach us how to make a small raw edge appliqué; Kits are made up, and we'll create a small project at the meeting.

May 19-20 County Farm Days at Lyman Farm. Guild volunteers will help teach and demonstrate quilting to county school children.

June 1-2 (Wed-Thurs) 4-H/ Guild Quilt Camp for kids 10 and up. This will be done in cooperation with the USU Extension 4-H program. We'll furnish the teachers with each working with 2 students. Gayle Marian is chairman of this project. We hope to engender interest in quilting among the youth of the community.

July 4--Annual Quilt Show as part of the 4th of July Celebration. To be held at the new Blanding Wellness Center. This is the 5th and(we hope) final location of the quilt show. The City of Blanding has also allowed us to store our quilt frames at the center, which will simplify set up for us.

New technique shared

Though Ila Sparks is not one to put all her eggs in one basket, she's not hesitant about putting all her chickens in one coop. Many beautiful quilts were shown at the last Grayson Country quilt guild meeting Feb. 16, but this quilt drew lots of ooh's and ah's. Ila usually uses McKenna Ryan patterns for raw edge applique quilts she makes and her brilliant rooster quilt was especially colorful. She has only been quilting for three years, but is the local expert on this technique. She explained, "I was taught to quilt by Cindy Foote and Amy Smouse at Quiltin' Chicks in Cortez, Colorado."

At February's meeting. the guild completed labeling and tying humanitarian baby quilts which are being given to the two county hospitals. They also discussed various ways to label quilts, and members were encouraged to keep a photographic journal of the history of the quilts they make. Members shared various ways of doing this: commerical journals, three ring binders, and published books using on-line templates.

Ada Rigby and Debbie Bayles showed "first quilts" they had made. Ada's was made in 1947 when she was in high school. Her brother, who was nine at the time, helped her cut the squares and make the quilt. It was still in good condition. (See attached photo.)

Debbie's was made 10 years ago in an afterschool class taught by Rosalie Payne. Bonnie Meyer shared a story of a beautiful pieced and hand quilted quilt that was damaged by over-washing, (See attached photo)

The guild encourages anyone receiving a one-of-a-kind hand-made quilt to lovingly hand wash the quilt, or use a gentle cycle. Many quilts have hundreds of hours of painstaking work in them and are heirloom quality. They need TLC when it comes to use and care.

Grayson Country Quilters

Continuing with their ongoing humanitarian outreach projects, The Grayson Country Quilters of Blanding, recently donated baby quilts to the Blue Mountain Hospital in Blanding. They hope to give one quilt to each new baby for the next six months. They have also donated quilts to the San Juan County Hospital in Monticello. Pictured with recent donations are business manager Kim Mayne and nurse Kendra Bradford.

Annie, who? Is coming to town!

Annie Smith, the teacher of the UQG’s Exploring Fabric Choices online class, is coming to Salt Lake City for the HMQS show and Quilt Market. The online Chat is scheduled for Thursday night, May 5th, but instead of just doing an online chat, we have arranged for a Meet-up at Quilts, Etc. in Sandy. The Meet-up will be an informal get-together like an Open House. We will meet in the Quilt shop and Annie will have all of her Exploring Fabric Choices sample quilts so you can see them up close and personal. Bring your camera so you can take pictures!

If you can't make this Meet-up, Annie will be sharing Booth # 631 with Valerie Burton at HMQS and will be available for questions.

Trunk Show

Kalico Kut-ups invited SuzAnne Bean to present a trunk show. SuzAnne is an expert when it comes to using wool and embroidery in her creations. It was amazing to see her pin-cushions, pillows, and quilts.

Click on the picture for a better look at some of these really cute things. There is a bucket at the top, elephant and cupcake pincushions and some table mats.

SuzAnne finally decided that she loves Kaffe Fassett fabric and designs.

This little quilt shows how piecing and embroidery complement each other.

The quilting on this one is wonderful and the blocks look like they are floating.

Piecing the Past

Come and participate in the only civil war era quilt show in the state!

The Heber Valley Civil War Quilt Show will be held on October 1st 2011 at Soldier Hollow in Midway, Utah. This quilt show is being held in conjunction with Heber Valley Civil War and Living History Weekend, an 1860s time period event hosted by the Utah Civil War Association. Beautiful quilts were made by amazing women during a very turbulent time in our nation’s history. Come see a reproduced sample of these civil war era quilts made by talented ladies throughout the state.

Only quilts that are faithful in color, material, pattern, and design to the time period will be allowed to enter this unique quilt show. Pre-1870 reproduction fabrics and period specific theme or patterns are a guide for quilts you may be considering to enter into the show. Quilts made from kits are accepted as well as quilts made as replicas of original civil war era quilts. Quilts made from your own imagination, as long as they are sensible to the era, will also be accepted. Quilt types such as Dear Jane, utility quilts, samplers, medallion, and signature quilts are just a few of the possibilities. Awards and ribbons will be given.

Heber Valley Quilters

The Heber Valley Quilters' theme for 2011 is TIME MARCHES ON. We will be learning about quilting history along with some of the major military conflicts the United States has been involved in since settlers came in the 1600s. We will also be making a block of the month quilt focusing on quilting history and using blocks that represent major wars and time periods in our nation's history.

January's meeting and block of the month was about the Puritans. Guild members have the option of making a flower and urn block, or a Puritans star block for the month. We learned about early quilting history and how grateful we are for all we have now! February's meeting focused on the Revolutionary War time period. Visitors from 1776 came and told us about such a trying and patriotic time in our nation, and members received their The Continental block pattern in honor of George Washington's Continental Army. We had a lesson on "Border Patrol' by Debbie Proctor. March's meeting will focus on the time period of the War of 1812 and members will receive 2 block patterns this time that honor those Americans that came to the US from Germany and settled Pennsylvania, those that fought the British in New Orleans, and Francis Scott Key who penned The Star Spangled Banner. Deonn Stott will be giving us 'tactical training' with a paper piecing review.

We are looking forward to a fun historical year as we move through time along with our mighty nation as Time Marches On.

Quilting at Colonial House

I've heard so much about the "Colonial House" quilting days held each month, that I finally had to go check it out. Becky Smith sent me a few pictures and some information that I posted here last year, but actually taking part yesterday was really informative, amazing and fun! By nine a.m. the quilt frames were being set up, quilts being tacked on the frames, projects and supplies brought out. I got a quick tour of the mansion (before being put to work) and was amazed by not only the beauty of the house, but also by the way these ladies worked together. There were four quilting frames set up in different rooms, including the central hallway, and another room for hand piecing, applique, and hoop or lap quilting. There were at least seven projects being worked on, all at various stages of completion. Just think about how well organized all of this must be kept!

All of the quilts that are made or donated during the year are for the Holiday Quilt Show and Auction which is sponsored by the Deseret Foundation. The monies raised from this auction is for medical research and education. The number of auctioned items has been around seventy-five, all hand quilted. Some are hand pieced as well.

Convergence in Ogden

The Ogden Quilt Guild had a fun meeting last week. Barbara Cook talked about Ricky Tims "Convergence" quilts. His technique is fun, easy, and always a surprise at the end. Next month will be a "hands on" workshop creating these unique little quilts.

The “wrap-up” meeting for 2010 was literally a warm fuzzy one with dozens of
quilts brought for show and tell at the December meeting of the Grayson
Country Quilts in Blanding. The outgoing officers, Deb Bayles, Cathy Hurst,
and Janet Bradford hosted a winter Luau with a surprise trip to the islands.

. Here are some of the quilts finished by club members this past month.

1. Cancer survivor quilt completed by Nancy Kimmerle and Kathy

Hurst. Nancy created this T-shirt quilt for a friend who has been cancer free for several years and participated in several *Race for the Cure* events.

2. Wedding quilt for granddaughter pieced and hand quilted by Glenna Webb

3. Janet Bradford displays Zig Zag quilt. This technique was taught at
our October 2010 meeting

4. Bobbie Holt shows completed tree skirt quild did in Nov.

Jeri Montella, our long arm quilter in residence, shows one of 4 quilts she completed in Dec. 25 patches per block.

Betty Shumway completed a beautiful blue and olive/ cream star quilt for a gift.

Winter Fun in Midway

A "Swiss Christmas" festival will be happening in Midway UT this weekend. Midway is a small town, but they really know how to celebrate. There will be a lot of fun things going on during the three day event, that you won't want to miss.

Mark your calendars for Quilt Fest 2011!! It's going to be held in Provo, UT, from Sept. 20th through Sept. 24th. The theme for 2011 is "We Cut Corners", so start thinking about making a quilt for the theme category.

It doesn't seem possible that today is already December 1st, which only gives us 24 days to finish our quilty gifts!!

Quilt Fest 2010 ended yesterday after four fun filled days. There was a lot of rain but no one seemed to mind because we were all busy with classes, buying goodies at the vendors mall, seeing old friends, and seeing the quilt show. The level of talent at this show was outstanding! It's just amazing to see some of the ideas and techniques quilters use to design their quilts. I was so busy and excited to see everything that I forgot to take lots of pictures, but here are a few for you to ohh-h-h and ahh-h-h over.

The luncheons are always fun and this year was no exception. Lectures and slide shows / quilts were presented by Mary Stori, Nora McMeeking, John Flynn, Sue Nickels, and Susan McBride Gilgen. Each one has a different style of quilt making so it was interesting to hear how each one began quilting and how they developed their individual style and different techniques.

Many thanks to the Quilt Fest Board and committee members for putting together our annual Quilt Fest!

Quilt Fest Has Begun!

Last evening was the beginning of Quilt Fest 2010! Quilt Show winners were announced and the teachers were introduced. Mary Stori was our opening night speaker and kept everyone in stitches (no pun intended) with her stories of how she comes up with ideas for design.

The lighting in the conference room was good for everything but a camera, so this photo of Mary Stori is pretty fuzzy. Check out the jacket! Yes, it's a crossword puzzle.

Quilt Fest starts in three days!! This fall weather has been perfect and may be just a bit cooler next week so if you plan on attending make sure you take a sweater or jacket. Midway, UT should be just gorgeous while we are there. Lots of classes taught by some wonderful teachers, both local and national. Our national teachers this year are John Flynn, Norah McMeeking, Sue Nickels, and Mary Stori. There are still spots available in a few of the classes, so check out the Utah Quilt Guild website for the listings. Classes not your thing this year? There will be a wonderful quilt show, mini-quilt auction, Breast Cancer block challenge and auction, a pattern exchange, plus our famous auction of Festival Baskets (full of goodies) donated and made by various people/guilds. We can't forget to mention what most of us look forward to.............the Vendors Mall!!!!

If all of this isn't enough to entice you, there will also be some special exhibits along with the quilt show. One is the Alphabet Soup Challenge. Twenty-six quilters each chose a letter of the alphabet and made a small 18"x 24" quilt depicting what that letter means to the quilter.
Another special exhibit will be the Heber Valley Row Quilts. I've seen these quilts and they are wonderful.

There will be a lot more going on to, so plan on visiting the show in Midway, UT at the Zermott Resort, Tues. evening Oct. 5th, through Sat. Oct. 9th. The show quilts will be taken down after lunch on Sat. but classes will continue until 5 p.m.

Julie Nelson and Judy Elsley are quilt makers living in the Ogden area. Both artisists design and make their own quilts, and they meet regularly for "play dates" to talk about their individual work and try out new techniques together.

Nelson uses a mix of commercial and hand-dyed fabrics, incorporating wood, metal and gourd shells into her work. Elsley's quilts are made from her own hand-dyed fabrics. Nelson machine and hand quilts her work, while Elsley often takes hers to a professional machine quilter.

Elsley says of their work, "We draw inspiration from each other, learn from each other, and we play well together. I admire Julie's creativity, her sense of color, and her beautiful quilts. We feel fortunate to have found each other and we enjoy collaborating."

In addition to being a quilt artist, Elsley is well-known quilt historian, as a researcher and author on the topic of quilts and their place in culture. She has taught a course, "Text and Textile: Teaching the Literature of Quilting," at Weber State University, where she is a Professor of English and also the Director of the Honors Program. The course familiarizes students with texts about quilts and quilters, ranging from such non-fiction as history, biography, and critical articles to a variety of fiction, including poetry, short stories, a quilt detective novel, children's books, and a play. Quilt texts are often connected with the textiles that inspired them so as well as reading, discussing and writing about these texts, students are invited to bring in a family quilt to "show and tell." As a final project, students make a small autobiographical quilt which they display and explain to an audience of family and friends.

Trunk Show in Ogden

The Ogden Quilt Guild enjoyed a wonderful trunk show with Lisa Brothman and Anne Munoz. There were a lot of o-o-oh's and ah-h-h-h's along with a lot of laughter.

Lisa has been very active in the UQG for a number of years, as well as teaching many of us her tricks of the trade. She started out making very traditional quilts and now makes wonderful art quilts.

Anne has never been what she considers a "traditional" quilter. She dyes her fabric using many different techniques, and often lets the fabric spark her imagination.

Both of these talented ladies love working with fabric, thread and "found objects" for embellishments. They use machine quilting to enhance and add dimension to their designs.

Grayson Country Fun

Last Wednesday evening our guild met at the beautiful Canyonlands Resort for our end of summer social. What a beautiful place and the view was amazing. Janet Wilcox showed the project we will be working on in September for a fun “sew weekend”. Sheri Guymon turned in her pink quilt for the cure block and it was adorable. Karen Dufur made a cute kids quilt from a kit she purchased on our Montrose Quilt trip last month. Kathy Hurst had a bright green and brown “Turning 20” quilt that she and her Mom made this summer. Our Quilt of Valor is finished. We also collected over 40 pillow cases that we will be giving to the school district’s Early Intervention program for needy children and families. It was a “last call” for Helping Hands of Haiti blankets and our guild came through with flying colors. Whew! I think our projects are complete!

Civil War Quilt Show

Come and participate in the only civil war era quilt show in the state!

The Heber Valley Civil War Quilt Show will be held on September 17^th and 18^th 2010 in the basement of AmBank at 620 West and 100 South in Heber City, Utah. This quilt show is being held in conjunction with Heber Valley Civil War and Living History Weekend, a 1860s time period event hosted by the Utah Civil War Association and the Heber City Corporation. Beautiful quilts were made by amazing women during a very turbulent time in our nation’s history. Come see a reproduced sample of these civil war era quilts made by talented ladies throughout the state.

Only quilts that are faithful in color, material, pattern, and design to the time period will be allowed to enter this unique quilt show. Pre-1870 reproduction fabrics and period specific patterns are a guide for quilts you may be considering to enter into the show. Quilts made from kits are accepted as well as quilts made as replicas of original civil war era quilts. Quilts made from your own imagination, as long as they are sensible to the era, will also be accepted. Quilt types such as Dear Jane, utility quilts, samplers, medallion, and signature quilts are just a few of the possibilities. Awards will be given.

Quilt Invitational

Ready for another road trip or day out with friends? Brigham City Museum-Gallery is having another quilt show. This one is titled "Quilt Invitational" and is featuring Patty Hawkins, an art quilter from Estes Park, Colorado. There are also 14 quilters from Northern Utah who were invited to show their talents. I don't have a list of the participating quilters yet, but I know that at least one of them belongs to UQG.

The show began on July 3rd and will continue until August 18th at the Brigham City Museum-Gallery. The museum is open Tuesday - Friday 11-6 and Saturday 1-5, and is located at 24 N 300 W. For more information call the museum at 435-723-6769.

Grayson Country Quilters held a quilt show on Saturday, July 3 rd during our towns Independence Day celebrations. Over 50 quilts from our community were displayed and several hundred people strolled through the exhibit. Five guild members made the quilt “Hearts and Apron Strings”. Because of the color choices, they all are very different. Many of us made the children’s quilt “Wiggles and Giggles” (we called it the worm quilt). There are many talented quilters in our little town of Blanding!

Deb Bayles from Blanding sent in all of these wonderful pictures. I love seeing all the wonderful things other guilds are creating. Once again the Grayson Country Quilters have been busy.

Quilt Festival 2010 - "Sew Many Friends"

Have you received your catalog of classes for Quilt Fest 2010? (If you are a UQG member you should have gotten it around June 1st.) This year we are going to the Zermott Resort in Midway, UT. The festivities will begin on Tues. evening, Oct. 6, with a lecture by Mary Stori followed by "Meet the Teachers". It's always fun to see the actual project for each class AND to meet all the wonderful teachers....national and local. The fun will continue through Sat. afternoon.

Grayson Country Quilters have been working hard on many charity projects: Quilts for the Cure blocks, One Million Pillow Case Drive, Helping Hands for Haiti quilts and infant blankets for our hospital. We still have many more to do/make, but we have a great start!!

The HMQS starts in five days!! Almost every quilting magazine I've looked at recently has either an ad or an article regarding this show. The April/May issue of Quilter's Newsletter has a two page spread featuring the HQX that was held in Rhode Island two weeks ago and our show in SLC! It's always exciting to find an article in a national publication that talks about people you actually know!

There will be a judged show with great prizes, quite a few special exhibits, and of course, all the vendors. There are over 100 classes being offered, many by national teachers. Check the HMQS website for more information http://www.hmqs.org . There may still be some openings for classes if you haven't already signed up.

This is a show you really will enjoy. If you've never been to a show like this, here are a few things to remember. Wear comfortable shoes, lighten up your purse or better yet, bring an expandable tote bag instead, (for all the goodies you "just have to have"), rest your feet by watching some of the demos/lectures which are free, and don't forget cash, checkbook, or credit card! Did I mention comfortable shoes? Oh! Don't forget your camera. The quilts are always amazing. Have fun.

UQG's Pres. Debbie Robertson and Pres. Elect, Crystal North had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with Alice Sundquist, age 93. Alice is quite a remarkable lady who still quilts most days. I love her idea of threading a bunch of needles onto one spool of thread.

These two quilts were made for her great-grandaughters. Hand appliqued and embroidered.

Alice taught the “Notan” type of quilting and even won an award at the 1978 Springville quilt show with this quilt. “Patterns in Nature” is the name of the quilt.

Sue McCarty, of Roy, UT has been awarded the BEST OF SHOW at the AQS show going on in Paducah this week. Wow! Her quilt, Tribute to Tolkien, won best of show at the HMQS last year, and has also won awards in CA and TX. Sue is a true quilt artist. The pictures of the wedding ring are a project a few of us did one Saturday. The picture of “Deb’s old blocks” is a project of mine. A box of my mother-in-laws sewing projects was found (she passed away several years ago) and was given to me by a daughter as I am the only one who quilts. She said to “do whatever” with them. There was a stack of the little hexagon blocks (around 40, thank heavens they were already put together! ha) that I decided to make for wall hangings and table runners. I have completed 12 projects and plan to give one to each of the 9 brothers and sisters. The extras will be raffled off at the reunion in July. I thought it was better for everyone to have a “piece” of their Mom’s quilt project. I sewed fusible interfacing to the hexagons, turned them, then sewed them on different blocks adding sashing. They are all different. It was a “Long” process but one that I hope everyone will appreciate. The 4^th quilt project is a picture of the material we are using to make our July 4^th quilt and the other picture is of a few members working on it. We had already cut it out and then everyone grabbed a stack and made the blocks during our March meeting. It is going to be a very striking quilt! The picture of Janet’s eagle is what is she making for one of her sons. An interesting take on the star pattern.

Robyn Orchard presented a wonderful trunk show at the Ogden Quilt Guild meeting this afternoon. Ogden's theme for this year is how to use your scraps to make beautiful quilts. One of the best web sites for patterns and ideas for using scraps is Bonnie Hunter's site at

www.quiltville.com . There is a lot of information and tips for cutting and storing strips, bricks, and squares of various sizes which Bonnie calls her "scrap savers system". Robyn showed us just how beautiful quilts made from scraps can be. Organizing all those bins and boxes of fabric can be daunting if you try to do it all at once. Instead, Robyn suggests limiting your cutting and sorting time to 15 minute segments. When the timer goes off, walk away and do someting else unless you are on a roll, then set the timer for another 15 minutes. It really is amazing how many strips, bricks and squares you can cut in what seems like a short amount of time.

Oh, yes! Quilters love their craft and they really love to let everyone know just how much they love it! Quilts were originally intended as bed coverings to keep you warm. Most of them were made with scraps that were from old clothing or traded with other quilters. Fast forward 100+ years and we make "lap" quilts to snuggle under while watching TV or reading, wall quilts (hangings) to help insulate our homes, art quilts, and more. The Knots have a Star

Brenda Sommers, a member of the Knotts group in Utah County, has recently been awarded celebrity status. She is mentioned in an article, "55 Rad Blogs for Quilters", in the April-May issue of the national Home Quilters magazine. Southridge Quilters

Mystery Solved in Blanding!

I just got these pictures from Deb,showing some of the "2009 Guild Mystery Quilt" tops. These talented ladies are from the Grayson Country Quilters guild in Blanding. It's always fun to watch the mystery unfold as we stitch the blocks, and sometimes it's really challenging to choose fabrics and colors when you don't know what the pattern will be. These turned out great and so different with each color selection.

Wild, Wild West

"Recently, Kalico Kutups swapped rows for their individual "Wild, Wild West" themed quilts. There were two groups and group A had to use the all of the same fabrics previously gathered. Group B also had coordinating fabrics to use in their row. Each person designed her own row and then made one for each person in the swap. Below are some of the rows contributed. We can't wait to see what everyone creates."

Seam Rippers

The UQG has a new youth guild called the "Seam Rippers". Kudos to the ladies who started this group and their wonderful sponsers. This is what the UQG is all about....."encourage, promote and preserve the art of quiltmaking". What better way than to teach our children.

Gone To Pieces

The "Gone to Pieces" quilt group is in the Cottonwood Heights/Salt Lake area. We are preparing for our every-other-year Barn Show to be held September 25. We have 35 talented quilters who enjoy meeting together on Tuesdays.

April Stirling is showing 2 of her quilts. One is her garden quilt with a close-up of the delightful machine quilting done by Charlene Nelson, a member of our group. The other quilt is her "Little Red Hen" quilt. She designed both quilts.

The flower quilt was made by Rita Grider and machine quilted by Renae Haddadin, a member of our group and a national prize-winner for many of her quilts.

The pink/black quilt was made by Tamara McDermaid, to give to a charity. Tamara makes many quilts to give away each year.

The red/black quilt was made by Debbie Nelson for her son-in-law who competes in Ironman triathalons.

Snow Goose Festival

The Piece in the Valley quilt guild in Delta, Utah had their annual

Snow Goose Festival on Feb 19 & 20, 2010. It was lot of fun! We had several vendors, classes, quilt show with a vintage display & a display of handmade items other than quilts, and other activities. Sandra Starley gave a trunkshow of vintage quilts. We also had a fashion show by Gracie Lou's quilt Shop, the outfits were darling. The Snow Goose Quilt show is an annual event, so mark your calendar for next year (Feb 25 & 26, 2011); also check out the website: snowgoosequiltshow.com for more info.

Whoo-hoo-o-o, it's time for the Spring Home and Garden Show at South Towne Expo in Sandy, UT. I'm cheering because that means that spring is almost here!
I'm also cheering because the UQG has a quilt show as part of the H & G Show. Stop by to see all the beautiful quilts and vote for your favorite. This show is not judged, but there are awards for "Viewers Choice", so go, have fun and vote.

There is a list of quilt/craft shops along with a google map, so check it out. Many of the shops will give UQG members a discount, so make sure you have your membership card (on the back of the Beeline for now)with you.

Wondering what quilt shows or retreats are coming up? The new Events Calendar will give you a listing of fun things to attend. Some of the events are local and easy to get to, and if you like to travel, some of the major shows around the country are also listed. If your guild or area is planning a show or retreat please let us know in advance so we can put it on the "calendar" and post info here on the blog. Ogden Quilt Guild workshop

The Ogden Quilt Guild had a fun sew in this week. The theme for this year is using up your scraps and the group got a great start on Wednesday morning. Kaye Evans is Ogden's program chair person this year and showed everyone how to make some string blocks using a paper foundation and different size strips. It was a fun morning of sharing ideas, scraps, and friendship. The bottom picture shows some of Brandy's finished blocks....the lower edge of the table. I was so busy sewing my blocks that I almost forgot to take some pictures!

Her patterns are free to use, but they are copyrighted, so please abide by her request for using them. She also has just had her second book published on how to use up what you already have.

The "Tribute to Friendship" quilt show at the Brigham City Museum / Gallery is awesome. There is still plenty of time to see all of these wonderful quilts along with some fun fabric postcards. The quilts have been designed by Kaye Evans using blocks from "round robins" she has participated in throughout Utah and several other states. I recognized a lot of names of people I have met at Quilt Fest and other venues. The blocks for these quilts were made from about 1993 to 2009 and it is amazing to see how quilting and the use of color has evolved during that time. You will also see some of the unique ways Kaye has put these blocks together using her own style and techniques.

I've included some pictures of parts of the main gallery along with a small sampling of some of the individual quilts.

Sandy Stitchers

Donna Moyer gave Sandy Stitchers a hand piecing presentation on January 14, 2010. She also gave us a mini quilt show of her lovely hand pieced quilts. Among those were these three, a replica of the skylight in the Celestial Room at the Nauvoo Temple, a Jinny Beyer design with a gorgeous hand appliqued floral border and a wall hanging with hearts. She puts on a great presentation and kept us enthralled.

Quilt Show in Brigham City

There is a wonderful quilt show at the Brigham City Museum-Gallery entitled "Tribute to Friendship: Quilting Round Robin". All of these quilts have been made by Kaye Evans, who is a well known quilter and member of the UQG. Kaye has participated in many, many round robins and facilitated the Utah State Round Robin for several years as well. There are 38 quilts on display now through February 24th. If you've ever participated in any of the state RR's, you just might see one of your blocks in one of these gorgeous quilts. It's always amazing to see how a quilter puts together all of these blocks, made by so many different people.

Admission is free and the Museum address is: 24N 300W, Brigham City.
Hours: Tues.-Fri. 11-6, Sat. 1-5
Dates: Now through Feb. 24th

Ogden Quilt Guild - January Meeting

Yesterday was the first meeting of the Ogden Quilt Guild in 2010. The program theme for the year will be focused on using what you have and lots of ways to use all those scraps that seem to multiply when we're not looking. Kaye Evans is our program chair and presented a fun trunk show with lots of scrap quilts she's made. The picture is just a sampling of what can be done, and if you want a closer look, just click on the photo. This group has a variety of fun things planned for the year, which will include applique techniques and embellishing your projects.

HAPPY 2010!!

Is it really 2010 already? This is the time of year we all make, or at least think about what we want to accomplish this year. Do you actually make a list and check things off? Or do you just go with the flow? Or are you somewhat in-between? I'm always full of good intentions and almost every year say "this is my finish those UFO's year"! Well, this year will be different! I've found that most of those projects are still unfinished for a variety of reasons.....wrong colors, boring, outdated, etc. Maybe what these excuses are really saying is that your abilities as a quilter/artist have grown to a new level. So....this will be the year to allow yourself the right to not have to finish what you really don't like any longer. Pack them up and find new homes for them, put the fabric back in your stash if you can, or whatever is needed to let it go. Keeping all those ufo's makes me feel "guilty" about starting a new, exciting project or technique.
Here's to a new year of guilt-free quilting!
